Whitewater Brewing Company is a craft brewer based in Cobden, ON. When the owners, hardcore river rats, weren’t paddling the whitewater of one of the world’s best rivers (The Ottawa), they decided to brew beer. Their endeavours bore hoppy fruit and international kudos, and are now selling beer in Brewer’s Retail and expanding their business and production capacity into a new, 7,200sf purpose-built brewery, restaurant and brew-pub. The building was designed to make the brewing process clearly visible to visitors, and allow for larger cultural functions.  The design speaks to the agricultural heritage of the region. The simple lines combine traditional timber elements with contemporary detailing, and advanced energy performance and mechanical systems to keep the focus on making beer in comfort, with ample light and air for owners, staff and visitors. The West-facing elevation features sliding, barn-door style solar shading screens made from locally milled Eastern White Cedar. When closed in Summer, these screens will reject 75% of solar gains, while in Winter, they roll out of the way to allow over 25,000Watts of passive solar gains to help heat the space.
